Psalm 48

1 A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. The Lord is great. He is really worthy of praise. Praise him in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2 Mount Zion is high and beautiful. It brings joy to everyone on earth. Mount Zion is like the highest parts of Mount Zaphon. It is the city of the Great King.
3 God is there to keep it safe. He has shown himself to be like a fort to the city.
4 Many kings joined forces. They entered Israel together.
5 But when they saw Mount Zion, they were amazed. They ran away in terror.
6 Trembling took hold of them. They felt pain like a woman giving birth to a baby.
7 Lord, you destroyed them like ships of Tarshish that were torn apart by an east wind.
8 What we heard we have also seen. We have seen it in the city of the Lord who rules over all. We have seen it in the city of our God. We have heard and seen that God makes her secure forever. Selah
9 God, inside your temple we think about your faithful love.
10 God, your fame reaches from one end of the earth to the other. In the same way, people praise you from one end of the earth to the other. You use your power to do what is right.
11 Mount Zion is filled with joy. The villages of Judah are glad. That's because you judge fairly.
12 Walk around Zion. Go all around it. Count its towers.
13 Think carefully about its outer walls. Just look at how safe it is! Then you can tell its people that God keeps them safe.
14 This God is our God for ever and ever. He will be our guide to the very end.

Summary of Psalm 48

Psalm 48 is a celebration of Jerusalem, God's presence within His holy city, His protection of His people, and the importance of remembering His acts of deliverance across generations. Traditionally associated with the Sons of Korah, the psalm belongs to the worship tradition centered around Jerusalem and the temple, and its language reflects a period when the city represented both the political center of Israel and the principal place associated with God's presence among His people.

The psalm begins by declaring that God is great and worthy of praise, particularly within His holy city. Jerusalem is described as beautiful, elevated, joyful, and associated with the great King. The emphasis is not ultimately on the city's architecture or political importance but on the fact that God is believed to dwell and reign there.

The central portion describes an apparent military threat against Jerusalem. Powerful kings gather together and approach the city, presumably expecting to attack it successfully. However, when they see Jerusalem, they become terrified and retreat. Their fear is described with vivid imagery, including the pain of childbirth, emphasizing that their defeat is sudden and overwhelming.

God's power is then illustrated through the image of ships being destroyed by a powerful eastern wind, reinforcing the idea that even sophisticated instruments of human strength and wealth cannot withstand divine authority.

The worshipers then make an important connection between what they have heard and what they have personally experienced. Previous generations had told stories about God's protection, and now the present generation believes it has witnessed that protection for itself.

The psalm therefore becomes a song of historical memory. The people are encouraged to remember what God has done and to communicate those experiences to future generations.

Another important theme is that God's protection is rooted in His faithful love and righteousness, not simply in military power. The people reflect upon God's character within the temple and recognize that His praise extends throughout the earth.

The latter part of the psalm turns toward Jerusalem itself. The people are instructed to walk around Zion, examine its towers, walls, and palaces, and observe the city's defenses carefully. These physical structures become reminders of God's protection.

The purpose of this examination is explicitly connected with future generations. The people are to tell their children and descendants about what God has done so that the memory of His faithfulness will not disappear.

The chapter concludes with one of its most enduring ideas: God will guide His people forever. The security described in the psalm is therefore not limited to one military victory or one generation but is understood as part of God's continuing relationship with His people.

Historically, the psalm fits the 10th–5th centuries BC, when Jerusalem experienced periods of prosperity, political conflict, military threat, and foreign invasion. While the psalm may preserve memories of a particular deliverance, no specific historical battle can be identified with certainty from the text alone.
