Summary of Exodus 37
Exodus 37 describes the construction of the tabernacle. Bezalel makes the Ark of the Covenant, the Table, the Golden Candlestick, and the Altar of Incense, in addition to the holy oil and the sweet incense. He makes everything according to the word of YHVH that Moses had proclaimed.
He first makes the Ark of the Covenant from shittim wood, which is covered on both sides with pure gold. He also makes a golden crown or border that surrounds the top edge of the ark. At the four corners of the ark, he also attaches four golden rings so that the ark can be moved with poles, also made of gold, but covered with shittim wood, inserted into the rings. The Ark of the Covenant also has a mercy seat made of pure gold, with carved cherubim, whose wings reach out over the mercy seat, hovering over it, facing it with their faces.
Then Bezalel makes Table of Showbread, again from shittim wood, covered with pure gold. Bezalel also makes a golden border around the table, as well as a rim along the top edge of the table. On its four corners, he also attaches four golden rings into which poles, covered with shittim wood, and also with gold, would be placed to carry the table. Additionally, vessels of vessels, utensils, dishes, and spoons for holding things are made, as well as covers for holding liquids. All this is made of pure gold. This table will be placed in the Tabernacle, where it will hold the bread of display before the Lord.
The Golden Candlestick, also called the Menorah, is made from one piece of beaten gold. This candlestick is formed from a central stem, from which branches grow on either side, with three branches on one side and three on the other. The branches are decorated with cups, shaped like almonds, as well as bulbs and flowers. Seven lamps are also made, as well as tongs and containers, all made of pure gold. A talent of gold is needed to make the candlestick and all its accessories. The Menorah will be used to illuminate the Tabernacle.
In addition, Bezalel makes the Altar of Incense from shittim wood, covered with gold. It is squared, with horns at the four corners. It also has a golden border at the top edge, and at the top of the altar, there are rings made of gold into which poles, covered with shittim wood, will be inserted to carry the altar. The Tabernacle then prepares holy oil and sweet incense, as per the instructions of YHVH to Moses.
Exodus 37 describes how the building of the Tabernacle continued when its interior furnishings were made. Bezalel and Moses’ assistants prepared the Ark and Mercy Seat, Table of Showbread, Golden Candlestick, and Altar of Incense, following Moses’ instructions, who in turn followed the instructions of YHVH. In addition, they used the supplies that the people had brought to the Lord, including gold.
While Exodus 36 described the construction and decoration of the Tabernacle, Exodus 37 describes what was prepared for the interior of the Tabernacle. These were the Ark of the Covenant, the Table, the Golden Candlestick, the Altar of Incense, as well as the holy oil and the sweet incense. All this was necessary for the Lord to dwell among the people of Israel, as well as for the priests to serve in the Tabernacle and for the people to worship YHVH.
