But the men said to Saul, "Should Jonathan be put to death? Never! He has saved Israel in a wonderful way. He did it today with God's help. You can be sure that the Lord lives. And you can be just as sure that not even one hair on Jonathan's head will fall to the ground." So the men saved Jonathan. He wasn't put to death.

Verse Explanation
The people defended Jonathan and refused to allow him to be killed. They recognized that Jonathan had brought great victory to Israel with God's help. They declared that no harm should come to him because God had worked through him that day. The people showed better judgment than Saul in this moment.
History
Jonathan's reputation among the soldiers was strong because of his faith and courage.
