Psalm 67
1
For the director of music. A psalm. A song to be played on stringed instruments. God, show us your favor. Bless us. May you smile on us with your favor. Selah
2
Then your ways will be known on earth. All nations will see that you have the power to save.
3
God, may the nations praise you. May all of the people on earth praise you.
4
May the nations be glad and sing with joy. You rule the people of the earth fairly. You guide the nations of the earth. Selah
5
God, may the nations praise you. May all of the people on earth praise you.
6
Then the land will produce its crops. God, our God, will bless us.
7
God will bless us. People from one end of the earth to the other will have respect for him.
Summary of Psalm 67
Psalm 67 is a short but powerful prayer for God's blessing that immediately connects Israel's relationship with God to the blessing and worship of all nations, presenting divine favor not as something intended to remain exclusively within one community but as something that should become visible throughout the earth so that people everywhere can recognize God's saving power, justice, generosity, and faithfulness.
The psalm begins with language closely associated with the ancient blessing of God's people: a request that God be gracious, bless His people, and make His face shine upon them. This opening establishes the central desire of the psalm, which is for God's presence and favor to rest upon His people.
However, the purpose of this blessing becomes clear in the following verse. The psalmist asks that God's ways and salvation become known throughout the earth and among all nations. This means that Israel's blessing is not presented as an end in itself. Instead, the blessing is meant to become a testimony through which other nations can recognize God's character and saving work.
The repeated call for the peoples to praise God reinforces this universal perspective. The psalm does not simply ask Israel to worship; it repeatedly imagines all peoples and nations joining in praise.
The reason for this worldwide praise is connected with God's justice. The nations are invited to rejoice because God judges peoples fairly and guides the nations with righteousness. Divine judgment is therefore not presented only as something frightening but also as something that can provide stability, fairness, and hope in a world where human rulers and societies frequently fail to govern justly.
The psalm then returns to its repeated invitation for all peoples to praise God, creating a rhythm that reinforces the central message.
The final movement introduces the harvest of the earth. Agricultural abundance becomes visible evidence of God's blessing, connecting the spiritual request for divine favor with the physical provision necessary for human life.
The conclusion returns to the worldwide purpose of blessing. The psalmist asks God to continue blessing His people so that the ends of the earth may fear and honor Him.
The historical setting cannot be determined with certainty, but the agricultural imagery and communal worship language fit the world of ancient Israel, particularly the 10th–5th centuries BC.
Psalm 67 ultimately presents God's blessing as something that should never become an isolated privilege kept only for those who have already received it, because the psalm begins by asking God to bless His people but immediately explains that the purpose of this blessing is for God's ways and saving power to become known throughout the earth, creating a vision in which divine generosity toward one community becomes a testimony capable of reaching many other communities, while the repeated calls for all peoples to praise God demonstrate that the psalmist imagines worship expanding beyond national boundaries until every nation recognizes the greatness of God.
The psalm also connects worldwide worship with divine justice, because the nations are invited to rejoice not simply because God is powerful but because He judges people fairly and guides the nations with righteousness, suggesting that God's rule provides the kind of justice and stability that human governments often struggle to achieve. This makes the psalm's vision both spiritual and social, because the recognition of God is connected with the hope that the peoples of the earth will experience righteous guidance rather than oppression, corruption, or arbitrary power.
The reference to the harvest provides another important dimension because God's blessing becomes visible through the productivity of the earth, reminding the worshiper that food, rain, fertile soil, successful crops, and the continuation of life are gifts that deserve gratitude rather than being treated as automatic or permanently guaranteed. The harvest therefore becomes a physical sign of the same divine generosity that the opening prayer asks God to provide spiritually and relationally.
The final request that God continue blessing His people so that the ends of the earth will fear and honor Him brings the entire psalm back to its central purpose, because the blessing of God's people is ultimately presented as a means through which God's character can become known more widely. Psalm 67 therefore teaches that genuine blessing should produce gratitude, witness, generosity, and worship, because receiving God's goodness should naturally lead people to recognize His source and to desire that others experience and acknowledge that goodness as well. The psalm closes with a vision of a world in which God's blessing reaches beyond one people, His justice guides the nations, His provision sustains the earth, and people everywhere respond with reverence and praise, making this short prayer a remarkably broad expression of hope for universal recognition of God's goodness and righteous rule.
