Psalm 101

1 A psalm of David. I will sing about your love and fairness. Lord, I will sing praise to you.
2 I will be careful to lead a life that is without blame. When will you come and help me? I will lead a life that is without blame in my house.
3 I won't look at anything that is evil. I hate the acts of people who aren't faithful to you. I don't even want people like that around me.
4 I will stay away from those whose hearts are twisted. I don't want to have anything to do with evil.
5 I will get rid of anyone who tells lies about his neighbor in secret. I won't put up with anyone whose eyes and heart are proud.
6 I will look with favor on the faithful people in the land. They will live with me. Those whose lives are without blame will serve me.
7 No one who lies and cheats will live in my house. No one who tells lies will serve me.
8 Every morning I will get rid of all the sinful people in the land. I will remove from the city of the Lord everyone who does what is evil.

Summary of Psalm 101

Psalm 101 is a personal commitment by David to live with integrity and to establish righteousness in his household and leadership. Psalm 101 presents a model of leadership based on personal integrity, wise choices, trustworthy relationships, and active opposition to corruption. The psalm is particularly important because David begins with himself. Before describing the kind of people he wants around him, he describes the kind of person he intends to be. He commits himself to living wisely and with integrity. This establishes an important principle: leadership begins with character. A person who wants to lead others toward righteousness must first be willing to examine and discipline his own life.

The opening combination of faithful love and justice is also significant. David does not choose one while ignoring the other. He wants his leadership to reflect both compassion and fairness. Faithful love prevents justice from becoming cold or cruel, while justice prevents love from becoming permissive toward wrongdoing. The psalm therefore presents good leadership as a balance between caring for people and maintaining clear moral standards.

David's commitment to his household shows that integrity begins in ordinary life. A person might appear righteous in public while behaving very differently in private. David declares that he wants to walk with integrity within his own home. This makes the commitment personal. His leadership is not supposed to be a public performance. His private life and public responsibilities should be consistent with one another.

The statement about not placing wicked things before his eyes can be understood as a commitment about what David chooses to focus on and allow into his life. He does not want to deliberately expose himself to things that encourage evil. The principle is broader than simply what a person sees. It concerns the choices people make about what they give their attention to, what influences them, and what they permit to shape their thinking and behavior.

David then becomes very specific about the kinds of people he will not tolerate around him. He rejects those who secretly slander others. Slander is particularly dangerous in leadership because it can destroy relationships and reputations without being immediately visible. A leader who listens to rumors or rewards people who attack others can quickly create a culture of fear and mistrust. David therefore declares that secret attacks on others will not be acceptable.

Arrogance is also condemned. Proud people may appear confident and capable, but pride can become destructive when it causes people to believe they are above correction or accountability. David refuses to make arrogance a requirement for influence. Instead, he looks for people whose character makes them trustworthy. This shows that Psalm 101 is not simply about removing bad people. It is also about intentionally choosing good people.

Verse 6 provides the positive counterpart to the earlier warnings. David says that his eyes will be on the faithful people of the land. He wants trustworthy people serving with him. This is an important leadership principle. A healthy organization or government cannot be built simply by removing dishonest people. It also requires actively identifying and promoting people who demonstrate integrity, loyalty, and reliability. David wants the character of his servants to reflect the character he expects from himself.

The following verse makes the standard even clearer. Deceitful people will not remain in David's household. Someone who lies or behaves dishonestly cannot be trusted with responsibility. In a royal administration, this would have practical importance. Officials had access to information, resources, decisions, and influence. Choosing trustworthy people was therefore not merely a personal preference. It affected the stability and justice of the entire kingdom.

The final verse shows that David understands leadership as an active responsibility. He will not simply avoid evil personally. He intends to confront wickedness regularly and remove it from the city. The reference to the city of the LORD connects this responsibility with Jerusalem and with the idea that the community belonging to God should reflect His standards. Leadership therefore includes both personal holiness and responsibility for the wider community.

Psalm 101 can therefore be read as a leadership commitment. David establishes standards for himself, his household, and the people who serve alongside him. He wants integrity rather than hypocrisy, faithfulness rather than betrayal, truth rather than deceit, humility rather than arrogance, and justice rather than corruption. The psalm recognizes that the character of those who hold positions of responsibility affects the people around them.

The chapter also teaches that integrity requires active decisions. David repeatedly uses the language of choosing and rejecting. He chooses to live wisely. He refuses wicked influences. He rejects dishonest people. He opposes slander. He refuses arrogance. He seeks faithful servants. He removes corruption. Righteous leadership therefore does not happen automatically. It requires continuous attention to character, relationships, decisions, and standards.

Psalm 101 ultimately presents an ideal of leadership in which the private character of the leader matches the public responsibility of the leader. David begins by committing himself to God's faithful love and justice, then applies those principles to his own behavior and to the people he allows into positions of influence. The final message is clear: good leadership requires integrity at home, wisdom in personal choices, careful selection of trustworthy people, rejection of dishonesty and arrogance, and a willingness to confront corruption. The psalm presents righteousness not merely as an idea to admire, but as a standard that must shape everyday decisions and the way authority is exercised.
