Summary of Exodus 34
Exodus 34, a renewed covenant with Israel, is a chapter in God’s Word describing how God renewed the covenant with Israel after their sin with the golden calf. Moses climbed the mountain a second time to receive a new set of tablets of stone. God made known to Moses His Name and nature. Further, God instructed Moses with the terms of the covenant, and the chapter concludes with Moses coming down from the mountain with an irradiated face.
God instructs Moses to cut out two new tablets of stone to replace the ones that Moses broke. Moses is to bring the two new tablets up the mountain the following morning, and God promised to write the words from the previous tablets on these new ones. Moses is further instructed to keep everyone from coming near the mountain, even the animals. The nation, including their animals, is to wait while Moses talks with God and brings down the new tablets of stone. Following these instructions, Moses prepared the tablets and went up the mountain as God directed.
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with Moses while telling him His Name and nature of being merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in goodness and truth. He further describes that He will leave iniquity, transgression, and sin unpunished but will punish the children for the sins of the parents for hundreds of years. Moses is overwhelmed, falls on his face in worship, and asks that the Lord would go with them since they are a stiff-necked people. Moses further prays that the Lord would forgive their sin and iniquity and that they may be His inheritance.
God renews His covenant with Israel, promising to doondrous things before them. He promised to cast out the nations that occupy the land that Israel is about to enter. God warned Israel not to enter into a covenant with the inhabitants of the land as their manner of worship may entice them to participate in it. Israel is particularly warned not to destroy the altars of the nations and then adopt their manner of worship. God instructs them to destroy their images and groves and warns them not to worship any other gods. The Lord identified Himself as a jealous God and warned Israel not to make a covenant with the nations. God instructs them on matters of worship and the feasts that they are to keep before the Lord. They are to keep the feast of unleavened bread for seven days starting on the appointed time in the month of Abib. The firstborn of Israel belongs to the Lord, including their animals. The firstborn of an ass is to be redeemed with a lamb, and the firstborn of a son is to be redeemed as well.
They are to keep the Sabbath, even on the most crucial days of plowing and harvest. The children of Israel are instructed to keep the feast of weeks and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end. The people are to appear three times a year before the Lord. God promises to protect the land during the three pilgrimages and drive out the nations before them. The Israelites were warned not to offer the blood of sacrifices with leavened bread and not to keep the sacrifice of the Passover until the following day.
The Lord reminded Moses to write the covenant, which He renewed with the children of Israel, and Moses spent forty days and nights on the mountain. Further, Moses did not eat the bread or drink the water during those days and nights. God wrote the covenant on the new tablets of stone, including the ten commandments.
When Moses comes down from the mountain with the two tablets of stone, he is unaware that his face is shiny from being with God. Aaron and the Israelites became frightened when they saw Moses, and they kept their distance.
Moses summoned Aaron and the rulers of the congregation and talked to them. All the children of Israel came near, and Moses told them everything the Lord had spoken to him on the mountain. Moses further instructed the people regarding God’s commands concerning their manner of worship. Moses covered his face with a veil when he finished speaking.
This veil was to stay on Moses’s face as long as he was speaking to the people. Moses would remove the veil whenever he went before the Lord to talk to Him and then put it back on when he returned. The people of Israel could see that Moses’s face was radiant after he had been talking with the Lord, so they could see the veil.
Exodus 34 restored the covenant relationship between God and Israel after the Sin of the Golden Calf. Moses received a new set of stone tablets, and God reaffirmed the covenant with Israel. The chapter reiterated God’s commands to Israel concerning worship, feasts, offerings, and Sabbath. It further described Israel’s relationship with the nations that God promised to drive out before them, warning them not to enter into a covenant with them.
The chapter concluded with Moses continuing as God’s spokesperson, and his radiant face is the sign that he has been with God.
