I saw the Lord standing next to the altar in the temple. He said to me, "Strike the tops of the temple pillars. Then the heavy stones at the base of the entrance will shake. Bring everything down on the heads of everyone there. I will kill with my swords those who are left alive. Not one of them will escape. None will get away.

Verse Explanation
Amos sees the Lord standing beside the altar and commanding that the temple structures be struck so that the foundations shake, while survivors will not escape, presenting the final judgment as reaching directly into the nation's religious center.
History
8th century BC: Bethel and other northern sanctuaries had become centers of worship that Amos repeatedly criticized for religious corruption.
