Why was Hebron important?

Hebron was the home of Israel's first family. Abraham lived near the great trees of Mamre by Hebron and built an altar there. When Sarah died, Abraham bought the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron for four hundred shekels of silver. It was the first piece of the Promised Land his family actually owned. Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Leah were all buried there. When Moses sent the twelve spies, they went to Hebron and saw the giant descendants of Anak, which frightened ten of them. Caleb, one of the two faithful spies, later asked for Hebron as his inheritance and drove out the giants. It became one of the cities of refuge. David was first anointed king over Judah at Hebron and ruled there for seven and a half years before moving to Jerusalem. Later, his son Absalom started his revolt there. Hebron is still important to Jews and Muslims because of the patriarchs' tombs.
