Why was Bethlehem important?

Bethlehem was important because it was where God chose to begin the royal line of David and, later, to bring the Messiah into the world. It was the setting of the book of Ruth, which shows how a foreign widow became the great-grandmother of David through the kindness of Boaz. It was where Samuel anointed the young shepherd David as king, overlooking his older, more impressive brothers. Because the Messiah was expected to be a son of David, David's hometown became part of the promise. Micah foretold that from little Bethlehem would come a ruler whose origins are from of old. When Jesus was born there, it connected Him to David's family and to God's promises. The book of Judges also mentions Bethlehem in some dark stories, showing how badly Israel needed a good king. Bethlehem's importance shows a pattern God often follows, working through small, unimpressive places and people to do His greatest work.
