Who are the "dreamers" in Jude 8?

The short letter of Jude warns about people who had slipped into the church and were turning God's grace into an excuse for immorality. In verse 8 he says, "In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings." The King James Version calls them "filthy dreamers." These people seem to have claimed special visions or revelations that gave them permission to do what they wanted. Some scholars think "dreamers" also means they were living in a fantasy world, detached from reality and God's truth. Jude compares them to Cain, Balaam and Korah, and calls them clouds without rain and wandering stars. The warning is clear. When someone uses a claimed dream or revelation to justify sin or reject authority, the dream isn't from God. Jude encourages believers to build themselves up in faith, pray in the Holy Spirit and keep themselves in God's love.
