What is the "blessed hope"?
In Titus 2:13, Paul says believers are waiting "for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." The blessed hope is Jesus' return. In the Bible, "hope" doesn't mean wishful thinking, like "I hope it doesn't rain." It means confident expectation of something certain that hasn't happened yet. This verse is also one of the clearest places where Jesus is called God. Greek grammar here links "our great God and Savior" as describing one person, Jesus Christ. Some pre-tribulation Christians use "blessed hope" specifically for the rapture, while others use it for the Second Coming in general. The verses around it show what the hope does in daily life. God's grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives while we wait. Looking forward to Jesus' return isn't escapism. It changes how people live now.
