What happened in Bethlehem?

Several important stories in the Bible happened in and around Bethlehem. Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife, died on the road near Bethlehem giving birth to Benjamin and was buried there. In the time of the judges, Naomi returned to Bethlehem with her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, who gleaned in Boaz's fields and eventually married him. Their great-grandson was David. The prophet Samuel came to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse's sons as king and chose the youngest, David, who was out tending sheep. Later, when the Philistines had a garrison in Bethlehem, three of David's mighty men broke through their lines to bring him water from the town well, and David poured it out as an offering. Then, most famously, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Shepherds in nearby fields heard the angels and came to see Him. Wise men from the east brought gifts. And King Herod, trying to kill the newborn king, ordered the killing of Bethlehem's baby boys.
