What does the man with the measuring line in Zechariah 2 mean?
In Zechariah's third night vision, he saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. Zechariah asked where he was going, and the man said, "To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is." Then an angel ran after him with a message: "Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great number of people and animals in it. And I myself will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be its glory within." The returned exiles were a small group in a ruined city with broken walls. They wanted to measure and rebuild. God said His city would be so full it couldn't be contained, and He Himself would be its protection. The chapter goes on to say that many nations will join themselves to the LORD. Christians see this fulfilled in the church spreading to all nations, and finally in the New Jerusalem, where God's glory is the light.
