What do light and darkness represent in the Bible?

Light is the first thing God creates, and from then on it stands for God, truth, life and goodness. Darkness stands for evil, ignorance, fear and death. Psalm 119 calls God's word "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Isaiah promises that people walking in darkness will see a great light, and Matthew says that promise came true when Jesus began preaching in Galilee. Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness." He also tells His followers, "You are the light of the world," and asks them to let their light shine so people see their good deeds. John writes that "God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all." At the cross, darkness covered the land for three hours. In the new creation there is no night, because God Himself gives the light.
