How does Psalm 22 describe the crucifixion?
Psalm 22 was written by David about a thousand years before Jesus, and it reads like an eyewitness account of the cross. It begins, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus cried out these exact words on the cross. It says, "All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. 'He trusts in the LORD,' they say, 'let the LORD rescue him.'" The chief priests said almost the same thing at the crucifixion. It describes bones out of joint, a tongue stuck to the roof of the mouth and people staring. Verse 16 is debated. Many Hebrew manuscripts read "like a lion my hands and feet," while the ancient Greek translation and a Dead Sea Scroll fragment read something like "they have pierced my hands and my feet." The psalm doesn't end in despair. It turns to praise, promising that future generations will hear that "he has done it," which some compare to Jesus' "It is finished."
