How can you tell a true prophet from a false one?
The Bible gives several tests. The first is accuracy. Deuteronomy 18 says that if a prophet speaks in the LORD's name and what he says doesn't happen, the LORD didn't speak it, and you don't need to fear him. The second is loyalty. Deuteronomy 13 says that even if a prophet's sign comes true, if he leads you to follow other gods, reject him. So being right isn't enough. The third is character. Jesus said, "By their fruit you will recognize them." A true prophet's life and message produce goodness, not greed or pride. The fourth is agreement about Jesus. John says to test the spirits, and any spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. Jeremiah faced a false prophet named Hananiah who said the exile would end in two years. Jeremiah said Hananiah would die that year for lying, and he did. False prophets usually told people what they wanted to hear.
