The Valley of Slaughter is the name Jeremiah said would be given to the Valley of Ben Hinnom. Jeremiah 7:32 says, "So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room." Jeremiah 19:6 repeats this, when he broke a clay jar at the Potsherd Gate as a sign of Jerusalem's destruction. The people of Judah had burned their children in the fire as sacrifices there, so God would turn it into a place of death and burial for them. The prophecy came true when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC. The Valley of Hinnom runs along the western and southern sides of Jerusalem's Old City.
