Sebam was a town east of the Jordan, listed in Numbers 32:3 among the lands that Reuben and Gad asked Moses to give them because they were good for livestock. It's the same as Sibmah, which Reuben rebuilt (Numbers 32:38, Joshua 13:19). Later, it became Moabite and was famous for its vineyards. Isaiah 16:8-9 and Jeremiah 48:32 lament "the vines of Sibmah," whose branches spread far and wide, now trampled by enemies. It was on the Moabite plateau, near Heshbon and Nebo. Its exact location is uncertain. Some scholars suggest Khirbet Qarn el-Qibsh, west of Heshbon, near Mount Nebo. Jerome said it was only 500 paces from Heshbon. The plateau is high, open land with fertile soil and enough rain for vineyards and grain. No events are recorded there.
