It's probably the same as Ramoth in 1 Chronicles 6:73 and Jarmuth in Joshua 21:29, a Levitical town given to the Gershonites. Many scholars identify it with Kokab el-Hawa, "star of the winds," a high hill overlooking the Jordan Valley, about seven miles north of Beth-shan, where the Crusaders later built the castle of Belvoir. Others suggest Tell Remeh or Kaukab, near Jenin. An Egyptian stele of Pharaoh Seti I, found at Beth-shan, mentions a mountain called Yarmuta, which may be related. The area has views over the valley and was strategically important. The name means "height." No events are recorded there in the Bible.
