Put was a people and land in North Africa, west of Egypt, usually identified with Libya. Genesis 10:6 lists Put as a son of Ham, with Cush, Egypt and Canaan. Soldiers from Put served in Egypt's army. In Jeremiah 46:9, God calls, "Charge, you horses! Drive furiously, you charioteers! March on, you warriors, men of Cush and Put who carry shields." Ezekiel 27:10 says men of Persia, Lud and Put served in the army of Tyre, and Ezekiel 38:5 lists Put in the army of Gog. Nahum 3:9 says Put and Libya were allies of Thebes, but couldn't save it from Assyria. Persian inscriptions of Darius list "Putaya," probably Libya. Some scholars suggest Put was in Punt, a land on the Red Sea coast, perhaps Somalia or Eritrea, known to Egyptians as a source of incense, but Libya is the more common view.
