Naphath-dor, "the heights of Dor," was the region around the city of Dor, on the Mediterranean coast south of Mount Carmel. The king of Dor in Naphath-dor was one of the kings Joshua defeated (Joshua 12:23). In Solomon's reign, "Ben-Abinadab, in Naphoth Dor" governed a district and was married to Solomon's daughter Taphath (1 Kings 4:11). Dor was a harbor town at Tel Dor, near the modern kibbutz of Nahsholim. An Egyptian story from around 1100 BC, the Report of Wenamun, says Dor was ruled by the Tjeker, one of the Sea Peoples related to the Philistines. Excavations since 1980 have found remains from the Bronze Age to the Roman period, including Phoenician and Israelite buildings, harbor works and a Roman theater. The "heights" may refer to the low sandstone ridges along the coast or the slopes of Carmel.
