Kartah was a Levitical town in the territory of Zebulun, given to the Merarite clan, listed only in Joshua 21:34 with Jokneam, Dimnah and Nahalal. The parallel list in 1 Chronicles 6:77 doesn't include Kartah, which suggests it may have dropped out of that list or had another name. The name means "city" or "town." Zebulun's land covered the hills of Lower Galilee and part of the western Jezreel Valley, a fertile region near important roads. Kartah's location is unknown. Some scholars think it might be the same as Kattath, another town of Zebulun (Joshua 19:15), or Kitron (Judges 1:30), but that's uncertain. No events are recorded there. The Levitical towns were scattered through all the tribes so that Levites could teach the law and serve the people in every region, and Kartah was one of these towns in the north.
