Humtah was a town in the hill country of Judah, listed only in Joshua 15:54 with Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron, and Zior, in a district around Hebron. The Hebron hills are some of the highest land in Judah, around 3,000 feet above sea level, with fertile valleys, vineyards and olive groves, and they were crossed by the main road from Jerusalem south to Beersheba. Humtah's exact location is unknown, and no other ancient source mentions it. The name may mean "place of lizards," from a Hebrew word for a kind of lizard. No events are recorded there. Since it's listed right before Hebron, it was probably near that city. Hebron was the main city of the region, where David reigned for seven and a half years, and many small towns and villages surrounded it.
