Holon was a town in the hill country of Judah, listed in Joshua 15:51 with Goshen and Giloh, in a district southwest of Hebron. It was given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron, as a Levitical town (Joshua 21:15), and 1 Chronicles 6:58 calls it Hilen. The hill country around Hebron is high, rocky land with terraced fields and vineyards, sloping toward the Negev in the south. Its exact location is uncertain. Some scholars suggest Khirbet Illin, near Beit Ummar, north of Hebron, while others place it southwest of Hebron. No events are recorded there. The modern Israeli city of Holon, south of Tel Aviv, took its name from this biblical town, though it isn't on the ancient site. The name may mean "sandy," which fits the modern city's location on the sand dunes near the coast.
