At the pool of Gibeon, David's forces under Joab defeated Abner's forces. Abner fled, and when Joab's brother Asahel chased him, Abner killed him. "But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon." There Abner's troops gathered on a hilltop, and Abner called out, "Must the sword devour forever?" Joab stopped the pursuit. Giah's location is unknown, but it was east of Gibeon, toward the wilderness that slopes down to the Jordan Valley, in the territory of Benjamin. The name may mean "spring" or "gushing," suggesting a water source. Some ancient translations read it differently, as a valley name.
