Mount Gaash was a hill in the hill country of Ephraim, near the town of Timnath-serah, where Joshua lived and was buried. Joshua 24:30 says, "And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash." Judges 2:9 repeats this, calling the town Timnath Heres. One of David's mighty men, Hiddai, also called Hurai, came "from the ravines of Gaash" (2 Samuel 23:30), meaning the wadis near the mountain. Timnath-serah is usually identified with Khirbet Tibnah, northwest of Bethel, so Mount Gaash was a hill in that area, in the western hills of Ephraim, sloping toward the coastal plain. There's also a local tradition placing Joshua's tomb at Kifl Haris, a village south of Nablus, which Jews and Samaritans visit. The name Gaash may mean "quaking" or "shaking."
