Egypt was the great kingdom along the Nile River in northeastern Africa, one of the world's oldest civilizations. The Nile's yearly flood made a narrow green strip through the desert, with the wide Delta in the north. Egypt was a place of refuge in famine for Abraham and for Jacob's family, and Joseph rose to power there. It became the "house of slavery," and the Exodus from Egypt became the central act of rescue in Israel's faith, remembered at every Passover. Later, Solomon married Pharaoh's daughter and traded horses from Egypt, Shishak raided Jerusalem, and Neco killed Josiah. The prophets warned Judah not to trust Egypt's help, yet Isaiah 19 foresaw Egypt worshiping the Lord. Jeremiah was taken there. Joseph and Mary fled there with Jesus. Egyptian records, like the Merneptah Stele naming Israel and Shishak's list of conquered towns, connect directly with the Bible.
