When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he secretly inspected the broken walls at night with a few men. "By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire." So the spring was along the route from the Valley Gate, on the western side of the city, to the Dung Gate at the southern end, probably in the Hinnom Valley. Some scholars think it's En-rogel, the spring south of the city where the Kidron and Hinnom valleys meet. Others suggest a pool or well in the Hinnom Valley. The name may come from a legend of a dragon or serpent, or from jackals that roamed the ruins.
