In Joshua 11:2, Jabin king of Hazor sent word to the kings "in the Arabah south of Kinnereth," gathering a coalition against Joshua. In 1 Kings 15:20, when King Asa of Judah paid Ben-hadad of Damascus to attack Israel, Ben-hadad "conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinnereth in addition to Naphtali." So the region was a target for Aramean invasions from the north. The plain of Gennesaret is one of the most fertile areas in the country, well watered by springs and streams. Josephus praised its fruit trees and mild climate. Tel Kinrot, the site of the ancient town, overlooks the plain and the lake.
