Calno appears in Isaiah 10:9, where the Assyrian king boasts about the cities he has conquered: "Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?" His point was that no city or god could stand against him, so Jerusalem wouldn't either. God answered that Assyria was only the "rod" of His anger and would be punished for its pride. Calno is the same as Calneh in Amos 6:2 and Kullani in Assyrian records, the capital of the kingdom of Unqi, at Tell Tayinat in southern Turkey, near Antakya. Tiglath-pileser III captured it in 738 BC and made it an Assyrian province. Excavations at Tell Tayinat uncovered a temple from the 800s BC with a three-room plan like Solomon's temple, and in 2009 a large tablet of a loyalty treaty of the Assyrian king Esarhaddon, from 672 BC.
